Using Nokia N70 as dial up modem

This is just an experiment I made with my N70. My goal is to test if the phone can really serve as a modem to connect to the Internet, just in case that Smart Bro is down.

Just a heads up, connection is successful, but I can’t browse. Whatever the reason is, I do not know yet. I do not have the luxury of time to configure all the settings, so bear with me. But I was able to get emails from my Gmail account in Thunderbird.

First thing that we need to do is to install Nokia PC Suite. Of course, this will come with your unit, but just in case you did not get one, or you lost it, it can be downloaded at the Nokia Philippines website. PC Suite is the last icon on the desktop menus.

Next, make sure that you phone has credits. I bought a Smart SIM Card just for this purpose, and loaded P 30 on it.

All I did was to select “Connect to the Internet” and the modem automatically dialed up. I did not put in any number, username or password. It will just connect.

To test if I could browse, I disabled my ethernet connection.

I was able to go to Yahoo Mail, but am not too sure if it was because it’s already saved in Mozilla’s Speeddial, or if I can really browse up to the login page.

Error message is insufficient balance. We have to remember that browsing costs P 10 per 30 minutes, so I should have an hour and a half left.

I could not even browse to Smart’s website.

Let’s check if I could receive emails. I disconnected from the PC Suite, enabled ethernet and logged in to my Yahoo Mail account.

I was able to receive the email through Thunderbird.

ABS-CBN News Feeds are also updated. Other feeds, though, are not working.

I was able to reply to the Yahoo Mail.

But, the antivirus won’t update.

Whatever it is that I did wrong, or failed to do, I do not know. But I think it’s just a matter of tweaking before I could fully browse websites using N70 as the modem. I did ipconfig, if this would be of any help.

Hi! As soon as my phone repaired I’ll try my luck to configure this too. Is it only for a dial-up connection?
