Asus EEE PC Experience
After draining my ATM card and the P 9, 000 I borrowed from my mom, I bought an ASUS EEE PC 8G last Monday in a shop in BF Homes Paranaque.
First of all, I purchased this portable because of the projects I have. I manage two publications, hopefully going three. It’s practical to have a portable computer as I manage the municipality’s newspaper and a church souvenir book. I have always believed that you can never use a laptop to run heavy applications; nothing beats a desktop computer.
Where did I purchase the Asus? Thanks to ebay.ph, I saw a store selling an 8G version for P 23, 000. BF Quest4Logic Tech is in BF Homes, Paranaque and I’m telling you, I have never been in this side of Metro Manila. I left home at 1 pm, I arrived at the store at around 4:30 pm.
So far, so good. I have never had problems with it, except for I am not able to use the webcam (yet) with Skype or Pidgin. But as I check the forums, there is a solution by downloading the latest Skype. I have to do to some other time.
Our house in Baras, Rizal has its own wireless network so I can go around with the computer. I tested it outside of the house and it was able to pick up the signal. In just 7 seconds, I am already able to browse websites.
It’s also nice that this portable has Xandros. It’s easier to navigate, compared with Apple, XP or Vista. Bad thing is, since it’s open source, there’s a lot of options to customize it and I don’t have the luxury of time to reconfigure the OS. But, as long as my notebook is working, no need to worry for anything.
From the specifications, battery should last for about 3.5 hours. Since it’s less than a week since I used the computer, it only lasts for about an hour. A little more patience, I believe since it’s not yet calibrated. I’ll give it three months and if there are no changes in the battery life, I might ask for a replacement.
Boot up is fast, though I haven’t timed it yet. I’m pretty sure that there’s a way to disable this second prompt when I’m turning off the computer. Looks like User Account Control to me.

Compared with the Mac that we have, this is a little bit hotter, I mean, temperature wise. It’s manageable, though.
My keyboard got some Chinese characters on it, which, as I check from Yugatech, is normal.
As a final note for this post, Quest4Logic’s has a good customer service. Since I am not familiar in the south (since I came from the east), I asked them for directions. They were helpful and nice, easy to talk to. At first, they found it difficult to get the password to work, and they have to make several phone calls. After 30 minutes or so, they were able to finally log in. The place is in an apartment, small place but great people.
