Spirit of giving this Christmas
Has this ever happened to you? You are in a jeepney and all you are praying is not to be late for work that day. All of a sudden, a child beggar, about 9 years old, with his dirty clothing and no footwear, approaches you and hands over an envelope asking for money. You could see the innocence in his eyes. He won’t talk; he just expects you to give at least something.
Fewer than five people will give money to the little boy. Others will pretend not to have noticed that they were given an envelope.
Some of us are too lucky that we do not have to beg to study and eat. I am actually bothered by my conscience that here I am, spending money for material things and yet, I could not share some amount to those who are really in need. Most of the time, I blame the parents of these children but we cannot set aside the fact that they are just victims of the circumstances.
While our lawmakers are in a junket trip to Europe with the President, here are our people, with nothing to eat, can’t go to school, living in impoverished conditions. And what do they there? Mandaluyong Rep. Boyet Gonzales is correct. “Taga-palakpak lang sila.”
